My visit to SKCV Vijayawada in Sept 2016

My visit to SKCV Vijayawada in Sept 2016

My visit coincided with a Major Hindu event called Krishna Pushkaram which comes every 12 yrs and lasts 12 days. The Hindus believe river Krishna as holy and take a dip in the river and offer prayers to their forefathers on this occasion. Thousands of pilgrims attend the event particularly from south India.  Several traffic restrictions were in place at this time and it was difficult to visit Night Shelter as it was located in the heart of the city.

At the main village, arrangements were made by SKCV with the help of Red Cross for visitors to have a ‘holy dip’ in the river in safe and secure surroundings. SKCV has invited several prominent local individuals and their families to increase the awareness of SKCV and also offer a chance to see the village for themselves and attract donations. I thought that it was a brilliant idea.  Dr. Reddy mentioned in his letter that several hundreds of thousands of rupees (equivalent to  thousands of pound sterlings) were raised on this occasion. Many visitors commented on the good work being done at SKCV.  I have also personally participated in this event.

My general impression is as in the last 2 visits that SKCV is well run and the boys and girls are generally happy. I could visit Amodini as there were no traffic restrictions in this area. The girls looked happy and healthy and are doing well at school. There seems to be good rapport with the new manageress.

Doctor Reddy is keen to know that the trustees in UK are happy with the way things are progressing in Vijayawada and welcomes any suggestions for improvements from UK. My personal impression is that he is working very hard despite his busy dental practice and Red Cross activities and  he is genuinely working to improve the lives of boys and girls He has streamlined all the administrative procedures and has good support from the fellow trustees.  I was told they are barely managing with the day to day expenditure from local donations of cash and provisions and have to dig into the savings. In addition they are also in urgent of need of a bigger vehicle to transport the children to schools as most of the children now attend outside schools.

I am returning to India  in 3 days on 10 oct as I want to be there with our sons and their families who are planning to visit India at the end of this month. I am likely to stay longer this time and would be happy if you wish me find any more information at SKCV. I am  sending  some photographs I have taken during my last 2 trips in a separate e- mail.

With Kind regards,

Bose
